Whisky & Tonic
Prep time:
The misunderstood cousin of the Gin & Tonic. Built properly it is long, dry and surprisingly refreshing; built badly it is a glass of tonic that tastes of wood.
Ingredients
- 50 ml whisky (bourbon, rye or a gentle Scotch)
- 120 ml well-chilled tonic water
- Large ice cubes
- A strip of orange peel
Preparation
- Fill the glass to the top with ice. The more ice, the less watery the drink: it sounds contradictory, but a little ice melts fast and leaves the drink weak.
- Pour the whisky over the ice and stir two or three times to chill it before adding anything else.
- Add the tonic with the glass tilted, letting it slide down the side. Dumping it in kills half the fizz.
- Stir once, from the bottom up, with a bar spoon. Any more and you lose bubbles without gaining anything.
- Express the orange peel over the glass to release its oils and drop it in.
