Irish Coffee

Prep time:

A warm embrace in a cup. Strong coffee, smooth whiskey, and slowly melting, floating cream. Invented at Foynes Airport, Ireland, in 1942.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz of Irish whiskey (Jameson)
  • 4 oz of freshly brewed hot coffee
  • 1 teaspoon of brown sugar
  • lightly whipped cream (not too stiff)

Preparation

  1. Heat a heat-resistant mug with hot, empty water.
  2. Add the sugar and a splash of coffee; stir until dissolved.
  3. Pour in the whiskey and top with hot coffee, leaving 1 cm at the top.
  4. Pour the whipped cream gently onto the back of a spoon so that it floats.
  5. Do not stir; drink through the cream layer.
